What the mega-trend map shows
The US market is not treating all structural growth stories equally right now. The screen ranks catalog themes by six-month average member return, and the leaders are the ones that pair a real secular driver with near-term cash generation: cybersecurity, data storage, and enterprise AI-automation software. The laggards are the long-duration, capital-hungry, policy- or leverage-dependent themes — quantum computing, solar, industrial energy storage, lidar, crypto platforms, and space/satellite.
That split is a duration story. With the effective fed funds rate holding near 3.6% and core inflation still sticky, the market is paying for cash flow now and discounting optionality later. Dividend payers are down only modestly while the zero-dividend cohort has drawn down multiples of that — the cleanest signature of a rate-driven repricing rather than a change in the earnings picture.
Where the structural thesis is intact but the tape is fighting it
AI infrastructure remains the largest secular driver — hyperscaler capex is still expanding — but the equity expression has bifurcated. Compute and data-center networking have de-rated as investors stopped asking whether AI capex happens and started asking whether the leveraged borrowers funding it can service the cost of that capital. Data storage and EDA, by contrast, are capturing the same theme through pricing power and subscription revenue without the balance-sheet risk.
Power and electrification is the other structurally intact mega-trend that is not paying off today: regulated utilities are providing defensive ballast while the battery-storage, solar, and hydrogen pure-plays are being repriced on rates and channel inventory. The demand signal — data-center load growth, grid modernization — is real; the financing environment is not yet rewarding it.
What to watch
Biotech is the most internally dispersed mega-trend: oncology and immunology offer durable, profitable exposure while cell therapy and rare disease carry binary clinical and financing risk. Defense components have de-rated from a strong multi-year run on questions about budget execution timing, not demand. The next leg higher in the speculative cohort — quantum, crypto-adjacent, space — likely requires either a sustained fall in real yields or a decisive risk-on turn; until then it is a watchlist, not a position.
