Built a three-panel trending-sectors view as of the latest trading day: (1) a table of sector ETFs in confirmed uptrends ranked by 1Y return (XLE, XLK, GXPT, XLV, IYH, XLF) with 1M/6M/1Y returns, distance from 150D SMA and 52W high, expense ratio and top holdings; (2) a sector-level aggregate table for US stocks with member counts, avg 1M/6M returns, avg % above 150D SMA, avg revenue growth, uptrend breadth share, total market cap and top names; and (3) a market-cap-sized, 1M-return-colored heatmap of all active stocks grouped by sector with industry subgroups. Commentary highlights the commodity-inflation, AI-hardware-to-software rotation, and defensive-rotation dynamics, plus the wide breadth/dispersion gaps the aggregates conceal.

Takeaway
Only five sector complexes qualify as technically trending today, and the list is narrower than it looks. Energy, Technology and Health Care are in genuine confirmed uptrends; Financials rounds out the group but is the weakest of the four, and the remaining sectors — Materials, Utilities, Real Estate, Industrials — have broken their trends entirely.
Three distinct forces are shaping this map:
- Commodity inflation is rewarding real assets. Energy leads on a 1-year basis with integrated oil and midstream at cycle-high cash flows and sub-book valuations, supported by WTI. Tanker shipping is the cleanest momentum expression of the same theme, though it sits outside GICS sectors.
- The AI trade has rotated from hardware to software. Semiconductor and AI-supply-chain names are being de-grossed while software and cybersecurity hold up — so Technology's uptrend is being carried by a different composition than the one that drove it earlier in the year.
- Defensive rotation is real. Health Care medtech and Consumer Staples are the only large complexes with positive recent returns, low volatility and improving margins, and they are absorbing flows from both rate-sensitive cyclicals and the fading AI-hardware trade.
What the aggregates hide. Breadth is far worse than the index-level numbers suggest. The equal-weighted averages across Energy, Health Care and Financials are dragged down by hundreds of small-cap members even as mega-caps push the sector ETFs to new highs — this is a two-tier market with the gap between winners and losers at extremes. Today's session showed flat participation but 148 names down 5%+ against just 25 up 5%+, so beta is not paying; stock selection is.
Positioning takeaway: trend-followers should favor Energy and the software-leadership side of Technology, use Health Care and Staples as ballast, and stay away from the broken-trend cyclicals (Materials, Utilities, Real Estate) where most members are below their 150-day averages and the move is being funded by capital-market access that is getting more expensive.
