Built a "New Uptrends" screen of names that just crossed back above their 150-day moving average (cross dates Oct 5–9, excluding stale reclaims). Stocks table: 45 names ranked by momentum potential (LatAm financials/consumer, financials broadly, medtech & staples). ETFs table: 22 funds ranked by relative volume (short-duration bond funds, XLP staples, gold/copper/natural-resource commodity ETFs). Includes a screen-logic narrative and qualitative row comments.
Recently formed new uptrends: names that just crossed back above their 150-day moving average in the last few sessions, split into a stock table (sorted by momentum potential) and an ETF table (sorted by relative volume).
Screen logic
New uptrends: fresh 150-day moving-average reclaims
Setup. The market as of the latest close is a two-tier tape — index-level resilience over a violent speculative de-grossing, with breadth flat and dispersion extreme. In that regime a price regaining its 150-day moving average is a meaningful change of character: it says the intermediate trend has stopped being a headwind. Both tables here show only names that were below the 150-day SMA and crossed back above it within the last few sessions (cross dates Oct 5–9), so stale reclaims are excluded.
What the stock table is telling us. Ranked by momentum potential, the list is dominated by two clusters:
- LatAm / EM financial and consumer names — MercadoLibre, Nu Holdings, PagSeguro, and the Brazil water utility — all reclaiming in sympathy with the strongest country tape in the macro backdrop (Brazil +14% in a month).
- Financials of many stripes — credit issuers, custody banks, regional banks, exchanges and BDCs — which is notable because Financials have been the worst US sector over the past month. A 150-day reclaim in a beaten-down sector is often the first evidence of a bottom, though it needs follow-through.
- A smaller medtech / biotech and consumer-staples cohort (Edwards, Intuitive, Monster) lines up exactly with the defensives-are-working rotation the research desk flags.
What the ETF table is telling us. Sorted by relative volume, the heaviest-traded reclaims are short-duration bond funds (VGSH, SCHO, SHY, NEAR) plus the Consumer Staples sector ETF (XLP) and commodity-linked funds (GDX gold miners, COPX copper miners, IYM materials, GUNR natural resources, DBB base metals). The bond-fund cluster is a rate/short-duration positioning signal — these funds are grinding back above their long-term averages as the front end stabilizes.
How to use it. A 150-day reclaim is a starting signal, not a finish line. The highest-quality setups are those where the technical turn coincides with an improving fundamental story — LatAm financials, medtech, precious- and base-metals producers — while the mere-technical reclaims in heavily-fixed narrative names (crypto, EV, speculative software) carry more risk. Watch whether these crosses hold above the 150-day line on the next pullback; that retest is the real confirmation of a new uptrend.
