Thematic Context
AI data-center cooling — the thermal bottleneck of the AI buildout
As AI accelerators scale from ~700W toward 1,500W+ per chip (GB200/GB300-class racks pushing 120–140kW per rack), air cooling has hit its physical limit. Heat removal is now a gating constraint on how densely hyperscalers can pack compute, which has turned thermal management from a commoditized HVAC afterthought into a supply-constrained bottleneck — direct-to-chip cold plates, coolant distribution units (CDUs), rear-door heat exchangers, immersion tanks, heat rejection/chillers, and the power distribution feeding them.
Demand drivers: (1) rack power density inflecting upward with each GPU generation; (2) liquid cooling attach rates rising from a low base — most new AI data halls are specified liquid-ready; (3) hyperscaler and neocloud capex still expanding, with backlog visibility for thermal/power equipment vendors; (4) grid/power constraints pushing efficiency spending (liquid cooling cuts PUE and water use); and (5) NVIDIA reference-architecture partnerships that effectively pre-qualify suppliers.
Pure-play vs. diversified: True pure-plays are scarce — Vertiv (VRT) is the closest (majority data-center revenue, NVIDIA GB200 reference designs, CDUs and heat rejection) with Modine (MOD) a near-pure-play via its Airedale data-center cooling business. nVent (NVT) and Eaton (ETN) have high-margin, fast-growing liquid-cooling/data-center power franchises inside larger industrials. The balance — Trane, Johnson Controls, Carrier, Lennox, AAON, SPX Technologies, Madison Air — are diversified HVAC names where data-center is a growing but partial slice; Comfort Systems (FIX), EMCOR (EME) and Limbach (LMB) are mechanical/electrical contractors that install the cooling and power infrastructure; Ecolab (ECL) is a specialty-chemicals angle via its acquired CoolIT liquid-cooling platform; Watts Water (WTS), Parker-Hannifin (PH), Graham (GHM) supply flow-control, fluid handling and heat-exchange components into the chain.
Note: momentum potential scores are a 0–100 composite of trend and cash-flow signals; names with a strong long-term structure but a recent pullback (VRT, MOD, SPXC) score mid-range despite weak short-term returns. Data as of October 2, 2026.

Heat-transfer engineering is genuinely relevant to cooling infrastructure, but data-center is a small and lumpy piece of the order book. |
| LII | Lennox International, Inc. | Industrials | Building Products & Equipment | HVAC & Building Climate Solutions | 1.231e+10 | -4.37% | -37.03% | -21.14% | -32.87% | -24.61% | 16.3 | 0.9692 | 15.81 | -2.73% | 8 | 6 | Downtrend | Commercial HVAC and refrigeration manufacturer; data-center is a small but growing part of the mix. Its residential/commercial exposure has been hurt by weak construction and tough comps, so this is a diversified cyclical HVAC name rather than a data-center play. |
| AAON | AAON, Inc. | Industrials | Building Products & Equipment | HVAC & Building Climate Solutions | 6.866e+09 | 11.74% | -23.75% | 2.55% | -12.81% | -17.06% | 6.6 | 0.6008 | 43.83 | 20.11% | 6 | 9 | Downtrend | Custom rooftop and data-center cooling equipment maker (BASX) that more than doubled BASX revenue and carried an outsized backlog into the year. A genuine data-center cooling growth story, but the stock has sold off hard with the broader cooling complex — execution and new-order momentum are the swing factors. |
