The Shortage Trade: Biotech, Barrels and the Cost of Compute
Market regime
Breadth improved again on 10/28 — 2,628 advancers against 1,970 decliners, average stock +0.43%, average RSI 51.0, $540bn of dollar volume green versus $344bn red. But the internals describe a market that has stopped paying for compute and started paying for scarcity. Two numbers frame it: 197 names gained 5%+ against just 65 losers of the same size, and mega-cap liquidity stocks (>$500M/day) returned only +0.73% — essentially in line with the average small cap and behind the mid-cap tier (+2.34% average one-month). Leadership has left the index and moved down the cap scale.
The structural backdrop stays unhelpful for duration: 10-year at 4.63%, 2s10s +51bp and steepening, VIX 14.6, dollar firm, WTI $84.77. Real yields, not breakevens, are doing the work — a growth-and-investment story, not an inflation scare. That is a market that rewards assets whose cash flows are physical or clinical, not assets priced off a terminal discount rate.
Mega forces
1. AI's cost of capital is now the story, not its revenue. Alphabet fell ~10% on a $51bn AI capex plan and worsening cash burn; ServiceNow dropped on AI-disruption worries. The capex is financing itself out of equity: semiconductor equipment is -13.2% over a month and -48% from its 52-week high, data-center networking -11.2%. Meanwhile the rent on AI — power, components, electrical equipment (+4.7% on the session) — held up. Own the landlord, not the tenant.
2. Clinical scarcity. Health Care was the best sector on the day (+1.85%, 455 names) and biopharma discovery platforms ran +4.21% with 84% advancing. GMAB's Phase 3 hazard ratio of 0.50 in head-and-neck cancer, AXGN +31%, KIDS +29%, ICLR's beat to a new 52-week high: idiosyncratic binary outcomes are the one thing the market will pay up for regardless of the rate backdrop. Biotech and med-tech sit ~1% off 52-week highs while the S&P sector average is 20-30% below.
3. Energy and commodity scarcity. Energy +9.8% / +17.0% / +59.3% (1M/3M/1Y), WTI +123.9% over a year, oil & gas drilling +4.56% on the day. E&P sits just -1.7% from its 52-week high, the tightest in the entire market, with supply consolidation (EQT-Range) tightening the tape.
What's working
Energy and E&P, oilfield services, Healthcare across biotech/diagnostics/med-tech, Enterprise Cloud Applications (+16.8% 1M — software is the asset-light AI winner), Cybersecurity (+13.3%), and Casual Dining (+3.6% on the day). Energy, Staples, Health Care and Discretionary all lead one month while Communication Services (-6.8%) and Technology (-2.6%) lag. Avoid crypto platforms (-23%), quantum (-20%), solar (-11%), gold miners (-10%, silver -10.5%) and rate-sensitive REITs. Brazil stays untouchable: EWZ -20.9% on the week on the Lula repricing.
Strategy
Half the market (1,844 names) is still in a downtrend against 1,751 in uptrends with only 25 breakouts — this is a stock-picker's tape, not a beta tape. Barbell energy cash flow against healthcare catalysts, keep software as the cheap AI derivative, and size positions to the binary events rather than to the index.
