The Quiet Regime Shift: Cheap Cash Flow Is Beating Expensive Growth
Market regime
The 10/27 tape looked like a relief rally — 1,797 advancers to 1,186 decliners, average stock +1.06%, average RSI back to 51.0, and $606bn of dollar volume green against $244bn red. But the composition is the real message: the day's leadership was Materials (+3.4% average) and Industrials (+1.6%), i.e. the single most oversold cyclical block, while Consumer Staples (-0.8%) and Energy (-0.1%) — October's leaders — gave back ground. Only 1,343 of 3,007 stocks sit above their 50-day line versus 1,421 above their 150-day, and the median name is -19% from its 52-week high. This is a stabilising, internally rotating tape, not a new leg of the index. VIX at 14.6 on a 4.6% 10-year says the market is pricing liquidity, not risk.
Mega forces
1. Capital scarcity is repricing the AI trade from revenue story to financing story. Meta upsizing an equity offering to $98bn and its $27bn data-centre bond trading poorly is the tell: hyperscalers are now price-insensitive borrowers in a market with a 51bp curve and a 14.6 VIX. That explains why Enterprise AI & Automation is -6.5% over the month while Enterprise Cloud Applications is +11% — the market is paying for software cash flow and refusing to fund capex-heavy compute at any price. Semis bounced (SMH +3.0%) but sit -16.6% from highs with RSI 46.
2. Energy is the only place where earnings revisions and price agree. Crude is +126% y/y and WTI +12% m/m, yet the sector still yields 1.9%, trades on a 19x forward multiple and 63% of its names are above the 50-day. The 10/27 weakness was confined to refiners (VLO -9.2%, MPC -7.4%, PSX -7.0% on crack-spread margin) while E&P (APA +20.6%, PR +19.5%, OVV +19.5%, COP +17.4% m/m) held within 2% of highs. That dispersion is a spread problem, not a sector problem.
3. The dollar is the quiet constraint. DXY +1.4% m/m with EM -9.1% and Brazil's election shock (EWZ -19.8% then a +0.4% dead-cat) means US liquidity is being pulled home. It also explains why the cheapest large caps with domestic revenue — Financials at 11.8x, Health Care at 23.1x with a 60 momentum score — keep absorbing flows.
What's working
Software/enterprise cloud (XSW +11.5%, IGV +6.0%, both at RSI 60-63 and within 5% of highs), oil & gas E&P, water/infrastructure, CROs (+11.5%, RSI 67), and P&C insurance. What to avoid: crypto rails (-20% m/m, WGMI -32%, though IBIT only -3.2% — miners and intermediaries carry the leverage, not the asset), quantum, lidar, fuel cells, satellite, semis equipment, and anything that needs cheap capital: Boeing -10.7% on delivery cuts, HCA on flat 2027 earnings, Xylem -14.2% on municipal spending.
Strategy
Own the second derivative of the AI trade — software, data, healthcare services — not the hardware. Add energy on weakness in E&P, not refiners. Use the Brazil washout as a sourcing screen for high-quality ADRs only after the real stabilises. Keep duration light: TLT's +3.4% month is a positioning squeeze, not a trend turn with the 10-year at 4.63%. Earnings are the catalyst, not the macro calendar — and after HRI, KNSA and ABG, the market is paying heavily for beats and punishing guidance cuts brutally.
