The Hardware Trade Broke; The Money Moved to Meters, Molecules and Barrels
Market regime
The 10/23 tape dealt the compute complex its decisive break. Only 1,056 of 2,973 active stocks advanced against 1,917 decliners, the average name fell -0.49%, and average RSI slipped to 49.7 — but the damage was almost surgical. Semiconductor equipment sits -48% from its 52-week high after another -19.8% month, memory is worse (SNDK -29%, STX -30%, WDC -24% in four weeks), and SMH is -12.2% over a month against XLK's -5.9%. Meanwhile XLE printed +2.6% on the day alone, and the 20-year Treasury added 2.0% in a month with HYG still negative — a bid for duration and commodity cash flow, not for risk.
Mega forces
1. The capex-to-cash-flow handoff. Two years of paying anyone selling picks into the buildout is over; the market is now repricing the buyers on debt issuance, power pricing and depreciation. The tell is dispersion — CRWD, PANW and NET up 13.3%, 11.3% and 9.9% in a week on software economics, while the equipment and memory suppliers that fed the buildout sit at multi-month lows. Capital is migrating from "who supplies the datacenter" to "who earns a margin from it."
2. Energy as the second inflation trade. WTI is +9.2% in a month and +138% in a year while natural gas is -9%, gold -6.1% and silver -15.2%. Not a generic commodity cycle: a crude-specific supply premium cutting against a flat funds rate (3.63%) and falling sticky CPI (2.72%), so inflation risk is now concentrated in the energy line and mechanically favors XLE (+10.8% 1M) and punishes rate-sensitive industrials (XLI -2.5% 1M) and materials (XLB -9.1%, RSI 41).
3. Defensive re-rating with a growth streak. XLP leads all sectors at +9.2% in a month and XLV is +7.4% with health care +11.9% over three months — staples and pharma with momentum, a combination that only shows up when investors want earnings visibility without bond duration.
What's working, what isn't
Underneath: 1,196 names are up over a month and above their 50-day versus 1,375 down and below it — a real winning cohort, no market lift. Leaders are enterprise software (Application Software +10.4% 1M), insurance brokers, HR/benefits administration, and oil & gas E&P. Brazil (+12.0% 1M) and tanker shipping remain the offshore expression of the same crude theme. Avoid: crypto & digital asset platforms (-34%), quantum, lidar, solar, memory and semicap. Communication Services broke down on 10/23 (T -8.0%, TMUS -7.7%, XLC RSI 32.8) — a fresh problem, not an old one.
Strategy
Split "AI" along the capex/cash-flow fault line: own software and security, avoid equipment until semis stop printing lower highs. Pair Energy and Staples as the inflation-and-visibility barbell, and keep duration (TLT +2.0% 1M) as the hedge if crude rolls over. Earnings are being graded on guidance, not headlines: FCNCA +8.2% and RHI +21.7% on beats, LKQ -22% and CRS -20.6% on misses. Size for gap risk.
