Three Supply Shocks, One Trade: Own What's Scarce
Market regime
The 10/21 tape was a megacap day wearing a broad-market costume. The average stock rose just +0.24% on 1,562 advancers to 1,404 decliners, but mega-cap liquidity names (>$500M/day) returned +0.97% while the small and mid-cap tiers closed flat to negative — and 589 of 862 ETFs advanced. Average RSI is back to 49.4 from the mid-40s, so the bounce is intact; it just isn't democratic. The split inside Info Tech tells the story: a +1.52% median with 111 names up 3%+ against seven down 3%+. Software and semis were bought; nothing else in the sector mattered.
The structural fact underneath all of this: only 290 of 3,010 US stocks are within 3% of a 52-week high, and 1,222 remain in defined downtrends versus 1,082 uptrends. This is a two-speed market, not a recovery.
Mega forces
1. Energy is now a momentum factor, not a value trade. WTI is +135% over 12 months and +10.9% in a month; XLE has made +61% in a year against Technology's +31.5%. Integrated oil members sit just 4.5% from highs with a 65 RSI and 30 large-caps at 52-week highs. Crucially, energy shows zero stocks down 3%+ on the day — the only sector with a clean sheet. Supply discipline plus $84 oil is doing what five years of "cheap multiple" arguments never did.
2. The AI trade is being re-segmented into operators and suppliers. Enterprise Cloud Applications are +10.6% over a month (Atlassian +19.5%, Veeva +22.9%, Datadog, Zscaler) while Data Center & Enterprise Networking is -15%, Memory ETFs -27%, Semis Capital Equipment -12%. Capital is rotating from the capex-receiving hardware layer toward the recurring-revenue beneficiaries of deployed AI. The Build is maturing into the Bill.
3. Financing costs are the new beta. Long bonds are -8.3% over a year, high yield -1.7% in a month, reinsurance -20.8%, mortgage REITs -12.5%. Anything that must refinance is being repriced; anything with locked-in cash flow is being bid.
What's working
Healthcare is the quiet leader: 60 names at 52-week highs, +4.3% in a week, +25.7% over a year — but the leadership has rotated from biotech beta to CROs and distributors (Charles River +9.3%, McKesson, Cardinal). Defensive cash-return compounders are also re-asserting: Cintas at a high, Visa and Mastercard both near highs and +12% on the month while the average financial is 2% lower.
What's not: crypto (-28%), quantum (-22%), solar (-15%), gold miners (-17%) and data-center networking. High-beta, story-driven, cash-burning beta is being funded by selling.
Strategy
With 1,593 US stocks reporting in the next two weeks versus 164 just reported, the market is about to be repriced by guidance, not narrative. Own the scarce: energy majors and E&P with locked-in free cash flow, healthcare services/CROs with visible earnings, and enterprise software compounding through deployment. Avoid pre-earnings positions in unprofitable duration — crypto miners, fuel cells, solar, and anything that needs capital markets to survive. Keep position sizes small into the print; the dispersion, not the direction, is where the money is.
