The Breadth Washed Out Before the Megacaps Bounced
Market regime
The 10/19 tape finally delivered the internals prior sessions were waiting for. Breadth stopped breaking: 22 stocks gained 8%+ against just 10 down 8%+, and 3%+ advancers outnumbered 3%+ decliners 255 to 159 - the first constructive tails in five sessions - even as the average stock closed marginally red (-0.06%) on 1,950 advancers versus 2,646 decliners. That gap is the story: participation widened underneath while the index tape stayed soft. Median RSI near 45 and the typical stock 25% below its 52-week high say damage is largely discounted, yet 1,212 names sit in active downtrends against 1,056 uptrends. A bottoming-out process, not a bottom.
Mega forces
Asian AI-memory unwind as the marginal seller. South Korea is -17.5% in a month and -4.0% in a session, memory ETFs -19% to -24%. Yet US-listed memory bounced hardest on 10/19 (WDC +6.1%, Sandisk +5.5%, SK hynix ADR +4.7%) after a brutal week. That is a positioning unwind, not a fundamental repricing - and the US leg trading against the local tape is the signature of forced selling exhausting itself.
Real assets bid, funded by a firmer dollar. Energy +6.5% and Staples +5.6% over a month while Technology is -2.3% is a rotation with legs, financed by a dollar up 1.9% and a 10-year near 4.6%. Oil-linked cash returns (+28.9% 3M, +134% 1Y) are pulling money out of duration. Silver -12.7% and gold -4.1% fell over the same month: leverage is being cut everywhere, not rotated into another momentum lane.
Thematic fragmentation - capex survivors versus casualties. AI no longer trades as a blob. Enterprise cloud apps are +7.2% over a month while data center networking is -15.6%, memory -24.6% and neoclouds -29.9%. Capital is rotating toward asset owners and cash-generative incumbents, away from anything whose valuation required cheap financing - a distinction the index cannot express.
What's working
Semis led the bounce (SMH +1.6%, XLK +1.4%) but only 33% of large-cap tech sits above its 50-day versus 61% of health care - tech is the oversold trade, not the trend. The trend is health care (XBI +2.5%, UNH +7.5% in a week, MCK at a 52-week high) with an active takeout bid underneath: SLN +126% on Merck KGaA's $20/ADS cash offer. Upstream energy is the other genuine trend (OVV +12.3%, SU +12.9%, APA +10.9% over a month, RSIs in the 70s), and steel is quietly re-rating toward highs - NUE and STLD, with CLF +16.3% on tariff-forward guidance.
Strategy
Avoid reflexive dip-buys in crypto-adjacent equities (IREN -41%, RIOT -41%, WULF -29% over a month), solar, EV makers and neoclouds - still in downtrends, below the 50-day, with no bid. Own the legs with earnings support: upstream E&P and refiners as momentum, health care and biotech as the low-beta catch-up plus an M&A floor, and selective semis tactically. Breadth is the tell; confirm with another two sessions of 3%+ advancers outnumbering decliners before adding risk.
