August 27: AI Moves Down the Stack — Software Blowouts and a Solana Squeeze
Market regime
The Goldilocks spine is unchanged — sticky CPI 2.72% and easing, unemployment 4.1%, a 10Y-2Y still near +51bp, VIX dozing at 14.6 — but the tape refuses to confirm comfort. Breadth was again negative (2,251 advancers vs 2,326 decliners) even as the average stock edged up +0.26%. This is a narrow, selective market: the index hides a knife-edge where a handful of software names and one crypto catalyst carried the day while almost everything else quietly bled. The regime is no longer “everything works”; it is “only the scarce and the newly-monetizing work.”
Mega forces
1. AI rotation down the stack. The Nvidia report lit up application software, not the silicon sellers. CRM (+22.6% on an 80% EPS beat and a deeper Anthropic tie-up), Okta (+28.6% on AI-agent identity demand), CrowdStrike (+20.5%), Veeva (+15.2%), Palo Alto (+12.8%): the message is that AI's value is finally migrating from the picks-and-shovels of compute toward the agents and security/software layers that monetize it. Information Technology was the session's runaway leader at +2.5% one-day, and it is doing this without the mega-caps — Microsoft was flat, Meta and Amazon fell. The AI trade is broadening into its second act.
2. The real-asset-and-cure tailwind persists (gold, biotech). Gold and miners merely consolidated today (GDX +1.2%) after a +39% one-month run — the Treasury buyback-driven bid for hard assets and the mRNA-cancer-vaccine bid for cures have not reversed; they are resting.
3. Crypto's supply-scarcity squeeze. Solana ETFs ripped ~13% across the board on SOL's first binding supply-reduction governance votes (SIMD-0550/0553), record ETF inflows and Schwab adding SOL trading. This is the same scarcity logic driving gold: a shrinking float meets new institutional plumbing.
What's working
- Enterprise software / cybersecurity / AI agents — the earnings catalyst is real and expanding; CRM, Okta, Workday, CrowdStrike are all confirming AI demand in revenue, not just narrative.
- Scarcity assets — gold/miners and crypto platforms remain the market's inflation-and-fiscal hedges; Solana's governance event is a fresh reminder that supply discipline is what this market rewards.
- Oncology / precision-medicine catalysts remain bid on clinical wins.
What to avoid
The consumer is fracturing. Consumer Discretionary was the worst sector (-1.4%), and the blowups are telling: Abercrombie +35.7% and DKS -30.7% two days apart, BBW -27% on a guide cut, HRL -10% on a cut outlook. There is no broad consumer trade — only survivors and casualties of individual execution. Staples (-1.0%), Real Estate (-0.9%), and the rate-sensitive defensives (Utilities) continue to give back the fall rally as long yields hold near multi-decade highs.
Strategy
Own the AI monetization layer, not the reflection of it: software and security names where AI is showing up in revenue and guidance, while the mega-cap indices idle. Keep the scarcity sleeve (gold/miners, crypto platforms) as the portfolio's hedge against the financing wall BlackRock's Wei Li keeps flagging — capex now competing with government debt for capital. Trim the consumer and stay underweight the long-duration defensives until the yield backdrop cracks. The tape is rewarding the names that can prove scarcity — of compute, of supply, or of a cure.
